Review of Kidde 900-0056 Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarm

I work at a truck shop where noxious fumes can sometimes make you sick. In the office we have this detector and it gives you that extra security in case the carbon monoxide level gets to high. It has gone off a couple oftimes, and you wouldn't even of known there was a problem otherwise.Basically this product works great, and I just wanted to let everyone knowabout it.

Review of Kidde PI9000 Battery-Operated Dual Ionization and Photoelectric Sensor Smoke Alarm

I had purchased the 'First Alert' dual sensor alarm (with remote feature), and it gave me nothing but false alarms, some in the middle of the night! Not so with the Kidde.Plus getting to and installing the 9V battery was much much easier on the Kidde than on the unintuitive 'First Alert'.This Kidde dual sensor alarm is the way to go if you want simplicity, ease of use, and peace of mind.I think I am going to purchase a few more now that I know this model works flawlessly.

With two different sensors, you'll get warnings sooner no matter the kind of fire. View larger.

Be assured of your home's safety with the PI9000 smoke alarm. View larger.Dual-Sensor Technology for Improved Safety
Experts divide home fires into two groups: flaming and smoldering. Flaming fires result from flammable liquids and cooking accidents, while smoldering fires most often occur when smoking materials, such as cigarettes, are left unattended. Ionization smoke sensors may detect smaller, less visible fire particles, like those produced by flaming fires, sooner than photoelectric sensors. However, photoelectric sensors are may detect larger, more visible fire particles, such as those produced by smoldering fires, sooner than ionization sensors. Each must pass identical performance standards to obtain third-party approval and meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 217, the independent standard to which alarms are listed. Because you don't know what type of fire you will have in your home, experts recommend installing both types of technology for optimal protection.
Experts Recommend Protection from Both Types of Fires
Virtually every recognized fire authority recommends the installation of both ionization and photoelectric alarms in order to maximize protection from either flaming or smoldering fires. Kidde offers photoelectric smoke alarms, ionization smoke alarms, and dual sensor alarms, which combine both technologies in one unit. Regardless of the technology, the most important thing is to ensure that you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Studies show placing alarms in both bedrooms and hallways could increase a family's escape time by up to 15 minutes.
Fire Authorities recommending both smoke alarm technologies:
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC)
  • U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
  • Consumer Reports
  • National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM)
  • Underwriters Laboratory (UL)

  • Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.
This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the Hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation.
Reliable 9-Volt Battery Power, Indicator LED, and Test Feature
Because a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.
A standard 9-volt battery powers this alarm, which provides continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards even during power outages. The unit offers a low battery warning that issues a brief chirp every 30 to 40 seconds for at least seven days before losing power, letting you know it's time to change the battery.
The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It features tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft.
This dual-sensor smoke alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

Review of Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking Alarm

I've installed installed two of these Kidde brand combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my elder parents home. I have one in my own home as well and have found them all to be reliable and trouble free.

What attracted me to this model were its many features:

First, it has a low profile, attractive and unobtrusive design.

Second and perhaps most important, it has a voice speaking function that, in addition to the 85db alert horn, will speak out clear warnings: "FIRE, FIRE" or "DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE". I think that this feature is a terrific addition toward modern life-safety technology. Indeed, you will likely see more voice warning devices in the near future.

We rely on these detectors to warn us, especially at night when we are sleeping. Awakening to this detector from a deep sleep helps orient you quickly by telling you the specific danger -- clearly and unmistakably.Notably, recent studies have shown that children can sleep through traditional smoke detector alarms, but will respond to voice warnings -- which this unit provides. Thus, placed in or near bedrooms this device can be a true lifesaver.

Another favorite feature is ease of installation. It was a breeze and truly could not be simpler.A screwriver is all you need.A small power drill/driver would speed the process, but is not necessary. Two screws into the ceiling or wall and you are done with the mounting bracket. The detector then just clicks in to place with a clockwise flick of the wrist. This is a do-it-yourselfer's dream. It doesn't get any easier!

Battery maintenance is easy too as all you need do is turn the detector counter-clock wise a few clicks, and down it comes. You slide open the battery cover, take out the old batteries and pop in the new.Replace the detector back in the attached ceiling bracket, give it a slight turn andin it goes with a firm click. Done!Easier than screwing in a light bulb.

Finally, the price is right! Under $40 for a unique life-safety device that is quickly installed and easily maintained.

I have elected to use Energizer lithium batteries and replace them every 12 months -- with no problems. You may wish to change the batteries every 6 or 9 months.Duracells would also be a good choice. I personally would not use the cheaper, so called "heavy duty" batteries in a life-safety device.

I should add that I would also suggest that if you have a home with multiple levels or an apartment with several rooms, having a separate stand-alone carbon monoxide detector elsewhere in the house as part of a total home plan would be a wise investment. Kidde also makes a fine combination model that protects against Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas.That unit, which has a digital display, runs on electricity and has a battery back-up system. It plugs in any electric outlet and can stay in the wall socket, or it can be placed flat on a table or dresser.

I would also recommend Kidde's dedicated dual sensor photoelectric/ionization smoke detectors. These dual sensor devices provide maximum warning under fast or slow moving fire conditions. As one never knows what kind of fire could occur, these are the most versatile.

Be sure to test your alarm regularly.REMEMBER that most carbon monoxide detectors NEED TO BE REPLACED about every five to seven years (see manufacturer's guidelines). Similarly, smoke detectors have a useable life span as well. It's usually a little longer than carbon monoxide detectors -- check your manufacturer's guidelines.

    Product Description:
The Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm combines two important safety devices into a single unit. This alarm includes a voice warning system that announces "Fire, Carbon Monoxide, Low Battery, or Smart Hush Activation." The voice alarm eliminates any confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide danger, or if your battery is in need of replacement. This unit uses three AA batteries, protecting you and your family even during a power outage.
This alarm uses ionization sensing technology for the smoke alarm. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.

The Kidde Combination Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarm includes a voice warning system that eliminates confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) danger, or if your battery is in need of replacement or your alarm is in hush mode.
    Alarm Warnings
Fire: The red LED will flash and be accompanied by three long alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning message "Fire! Fire!" The alarm will repeat the pattern until smoke is eliminated. View movie showing voice warning

Low Battery: One chirp followed by warning "Low Battery." The red LED light will flash. This pattern will continue every minute for the first hour. After the first hour, the red LED light will flash once every minute and will be accompanied by the chirp sound. The "Low Battery" warning will only sound once every fifteen minutes.
Voice Hush Indication: "Hush Activated" and "Hush Canceled" voice announcement.
Peak Level Memory: If the alarm had detected a CO level of 100ppm or higher when the Test/Reset button is pressed, the unit will announce "Carbon Monoxide Previously Detected" to warn of the CO incident.
    Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.
This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately 10 minutes. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately, the unit will verbally announce "Hush Mode Activated", and the green LED will flash every 2 seconds for approximately 10 minutes.
Reliable Battery Power, Indicator LED, Test Feature and Low-Battery Warning
The battery powered alarm provides continuous protection, even during power outages. Because this alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm also contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.
If any form of battery failure is detected the red LED light will flash and the unit will "chirp" one time, followed by the warning message "Low Battery." This cycle will occur once every minute, and will continue for at least seven days.
Seven (7) years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every 30 seconds. This is an "operational end of life" feature which will indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. UL 2034, the independent standard applicable to CO alarms, requires CO alarms to have an end of life warning. This requirement went into effect in March 2007, meaning any CO alarm manufactured after April 2007 with a UL listing must have this feature. Most states that require CO alarms in residential dwellings mandate that the alarm meet the UL 2034 standard.
The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.7 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It includes tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft. This combination smoke/CO alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

Review of Kidde 900-0235 Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarm, Long Life AC Powered with Battery Backup

The tamper resistant feature is nice, if you have kids, but who reads the manual first?

I figured it to be "plug and play" but after I installed the battery and did NOT plug it into a wall outlet, the alarm went off like it was doomsday. First gut reaction was, it's detecting CO in the house!!!? Second gut reaction, too big of a coincidence. So I returned it and got a replacement. This time I put in the battery and luckily plugged it in before the two minute countdown. Unknown to me, as soon as you insert the backup battery you have 2 minutes to plug the unit in a wall outlet before the alarm goes off.

Late in the evening, after plugging it in, I wanted to put it in another room and all "heck" broke loose (85db) before I figured out that the little switch on the back had to be pressed before it would stop and NOT the big test button on the front. Another note I would like to point out... it sounds identical to a fire alarm. Personally, I wished it would have it's own unique sound so there would be no confusion whether it's a fire in the house or the Nighthawk detecting Carbon Monoxide. All in all, the detector seems solid although the test button is "funky." Consumer Research gave it very good ratings and the lil green light tells me it on - so I'm confident about this purchase.

Note: I'm good at hooking up home theater systems and calibrating HDTVs without referring back to the manual. So plugging in this CO detector turned into a lesson of humility for me. So please read the manual first.

Review of Kidde Nighthawk 900-0089 Carbon Monoxide Alarm

I just received this from Amazon, at a sale price, so I thought I would clarify what Amazon is selling here. This is the Kidde model number number KN-COPP-B, which is shared by several "assembly numbers" of which this is 900-0089. I think that is what's in the fine print in the photo of the back, but it's hard to read. There are slight cosmetic differences between the pictures and what I received, but less than with other Amazon listings of COPP-B with other assembly numbers.

The important thing is that, although this assembly number has been in use for many years (Google it), the guts of this are the newer technology with the seven year lifespan and death chirp alert, according to what's printed on the case. The case has a handy little summary of what to do for various ranges of alarm readings, so you don't call 911 for minor things, and since you'll never find the manual, which you can read at [...] , albeit for another COPP-B assembly number.

Review of Kidde 900-0234 Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarm, Long Life AC Powered with Battery Backup and Digital Display

Kidde makes good CO detectors. We've had several Nighthawks for years and they've worked well (at least we think so, never had a CO problem). Our previous version was the the COPP-3 (we had a couple of experiences with the low battery chirping-- a nuisance in the middle of the night--and once, it happened again shortly after we had put a new battery in.Others have had many more problems in that regard--see reviews).

It was time to replace them.We first bought 3 Kidde KN-COPP-B Front Load Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display--but ran into several problems (see my review). The biggest problem was that Amazon's stock was old (the detectors were over 2 years old) and the warranty was only for 5 years.Other downsides are that they required mounting and were only battery operated! We returned them making use of Amazon's consumer-friendly return policy.

We then bought this model. It has these great features.

1)Comes with a 7-year warranty (new feature, old had 5 years).

2)Shows the CO level continuously. It's reassuring to see the red LED showing 0!

3)Has a well designed, clearly organized printed manual (a small booklet).

4)Operates off of AC with a battery backup.(That's helpful as you have the best of both worlds!)

5)Has peak level button (this is a new feature).

    6)Battery included.

    A Big Downside:

A big downside is that they eliminated the plug on a cord. That was really helpful as it gives the user real flexibility in where to put the detector. In our bedroom, the only accessible plugs are beside a dresser in a corner or between bookshelves and the TV stand, meaning less air flow. With the old model, you could plug in the device and then with the cord, put the detector on the top of a bookshelf or stand.Much more convenient.

The other problem, which plagues all the CO detectors and many other products on the market, is the infuriating, hard plastic packaging. It's hard to open and I even cut myself on it.There are alternatives that are just as secure but much friendlier to the environment and the customer!

We still have a year or two left on one of our old ones, so we're keeping that.We also bought a First Alert CO615, which does have the cord, and we'll probably move that into our bedroom when the time comes.(But it has more negatives--see review!)

Review of Kidde KN-COPP-B Front Load Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display

This product was selected as a Best Buy by Consumer Reports based on value for your money. From what I can tell thus far they were spot on. The exterior looks like any other CO or smoke detector you might find in the hardware section of a store. The template and screws that are included make it extremely easy to mount. I especially like the LED display that tells you the current level of CO in ppm (parts per million) of the sampled air. There are other detectors out there that have some fancy talking alarms and other useless features but I don't think they're necessary. This CO monitor has everything a person should need for keeping track of the level of Carbon Monoxide in their house.

    Product Description:
The Kidde 900-0146 battery-operated carbon monoxide (CO) alarm uses the patented Nighthawk electrochemical CO sensor to help protect you and your family from the dangers of CO. Easy to install, the 900-0146's backlit digital display shows CO levels in parts per million and updates every 15 seconds. When the unit is operating properly and hazardous CO levels are not detected, its green LED flashes every 30 seconds. In a CO emergency, the red LED pulses and an 85 db horn sounds at specific intervals until the CO threat is eliminated. Because it's powered by 3 AA batteries, the 900-0146 is able to provide continuous monitoring of CO levels, even during power outages. And the unit has an alarm that tells you when the batteries need to be replaced. The snap-open cover makes this task simple, and a special safety feature makes the cover difficult to put back on if you forget to install new batteries. For peace of mind, a test/reset button allows you to test that alarm is functioning properly. Plus a peak-level memory keeps track of the maximum CO level detected between resets. The 900-0146 is covered with a five-year manufacturer's limited warranty and replacement is recommended after seven years.

    What is Carbon Monoxide?
CO is an invisible, odorless poisonous gas that can be fatal when inhaled. It is the number one cause of unintentional poisoning deaths in the United States.
CO causes approximately 2,100 deaths and more than 10,000 injuries annually. Some experts believe the actual numbers may be much higher because CO symptoms mimic the flu and other common illnesses. Thus, CO poisoning can be easily missed during a routine medical examination.

Where Does Carbon Monoxide Come From?

CO is produced when any fuel is incompletely burned because of insufficient oxygen. Wood fires and charcoal grills produce large amounts of CO. Malfunctioning heating systems also produce CO.
There are two ways to discover if carbon monoxide is present in your home: one is to become very ill and possibly die--the other way is to install a carbon monoxide alarm.

    How Carbon Monoxide Affects You
CO combines with hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying agent in the red blood cells. When oxygen is robbed from the brain and other organs, death can result. In addition, up to 40 percent of survivors of severe CO poisoning develop memory impairment and other serious illnesses.
Many cases of reported carbon monoxide poisoning indicate that victims are aware they are not well but become so disoriented that they are unable to save themselves.

How To Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends every residence with fuel-burning appliances be equipped with at least one UL Listed CO alarm.
In addition, take the following measures:
    • Make sure appliances are installed and operated according to manufacturer's instructions.
    • Have the heating system, chimney and vents inspected and serviced annually.
    • Examine vents and chimneys regularly for improper connections, cracks, rust or stains.
    • Make sure to read your CO alarm's user's guide and keep it near your CO alarm for quick reference.

    How A CO Alarm Works
If CO does find its way into your home, the levels may build, creating a dangerous situation. In the UL2034 Standard, Underwriters Laboratories specifies response times for CO alarms as follows:
    • At 70 parts per million: Unit must sound alarm within 60-240 minutes.
    • At 150 parts per million: Unit must sound alarm within 10-50 minutes.
    • At 400 parts per million: Unit must sound alarm within 4-15 minutes.
    Basic CO Alarm Features
    • Test button so that you can make sure unit is working.
    • LED light that tells you the unit has power.
    Premium CO Alarm Features
    • Digital Display: Displays carbon monoxide levels in parts per million.
    • Peak Level Memory: Reports the highest level of CO registered by the unit.
    • Voice Alarm: Eliminates confusion and warns of a dangerous level of CO.
    • Electrochemical Sensor: State-of-the-art sensing technology provides optimum protection.
    • Battery Backup: Offers continuous protection even during power outages.
    • Combination sensors: Provides protection from multiple hazards.
What To Do If Your CO Alarm Sounds
    1.Operate the test/reset button.
2.Call your emergency services (fire department or 911).
3.Immediately move to fresh air--outdoors or by an open door/window.
4.After following steps 1-3, if your alarm reactivates within a 24 hour period, repeat steps 1-3 and call a qualified appliance technician to investigate for sources of CO.

I also had a problem with my two detectors using up the batteries in one to two months time. But I called Kidde customer service and after I gave them the model no and assembly dates from the back of the units, they confirmed that these models were defective.Apparently there is a faulty circuit that triggers the low battery indicator prematurely. So the batteries are actually not worn down completely. The problem is with the sensor that reads the battery levels.Kidde sent me two new detectors. They are working fine so far.I will know more after a couple months. If you have this problem, call Kidde customer service and they should take care of you.
